Ship of Souls

TRAQUAIR HOUSE, 2016

Ship of Souls was a weekend-long art event that took place during the international Beyond Borders Festival of Literature and Thought in 2016. During the Festival artists Inge Panneels and Mark Timmins invited visitors to write reflections on the current refugee crisis on a piece of paper before folding it up into a paper boat. The collection of boats gathered throughout the weekend-long festival, were later launched into the local Quair water, and the perilous journey of the tiny little boats in and to the River Tweed served as a metaphor for the journeys undertaken by refugees. We are still hoping to turn the footage into a short film….

The Beyond Borders International Festival provides a platform for Small Nation Dialogue and Cultural Exchange at Traquair House in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

This event came out from the experimental collaborative work Inge and Mark developed during Reflections earlier in 2016.

People were invited to reflect and write down thoughts, wishes, comments… on the current refugee crisis. In the context of the Festival, many personal stories of refugee journeys could be heard in stories, song, poetry and film.
