Belgian born artist Inge Panneels collaborated with Japanese artist Minako Shirakura on Wanderers of the Earth: The Milky Way Above. Both artists lived and worked in Edinburgh, Scotland when they met in the 1990s. The work was originally commissioned for the Wordsworth and Bashō: Walking Poets exhibition at Dove Cottage at the Wordsworth Museum in the Lake District (United Kingdom) in 2014. This collaborative project was an international exchange inspired by the poetry of two walking poets.
The English Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) and Japanese haiku poet 松尾 芭蕉 (Matsuo Bashō) (1644-1694) had much in common, even though they lived a century and a world apart. They both pioneered the use of everyday language in poetry; they both used the natural world to express their ideas; and they both composed their poetry as they walked.
This work was also exhibited at the Wordsworth and Basho: Walking Poets exhibition at Kakimori Bunko in Japan in 2016 for which they then produced a new short film.
This project was a collaboration with Japanese artist Minako Shirakura and curated by Mike Collier. Film by Kevin Greenfield.
